Bohol Rocky Wall

A deadly earthquake that struck the Philippines last week created a spectacular rocky wall that stretches for kilometres through farmlands, astounded geologists said Thursday.
Dramatic pictures of the Earth-altering power of the 7.1-magnitide quake have emerged as the government worked to mend the broken central island of Bohol, ground zero of the destruction.

A "ground rupture" pushed up a stretch of ground by up to three metres (10 feet), creating a wall of rock above the epicentre, Maria Isabel Abigania, a geologist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, told AFP.
"Our people have walked five kilometres (three miles) so far and not found the end of this wall," she said, as experts from the institute surveyed the damage.
"So far we have not gotten any reports of people getting swallowed up in these cracks. The fault runs along a less-populated area."
A photograph on the institute's website showed part of the rock wall grotesquely rising on farmland behind an unscathed bamboo hut.
Another house was shown lodged in a crack of the Earth, while a big hole on the ground opened up at a banana farm.
Renato Solidum, head of the institute, said the ground fissures from the quake, which killed 198 people on Bohol and two nearby islands, were among the largest recorded since the government agency began keeping quake records in 1987.
"Most of our other quake records show a lateral (sideways) tearing of the earth, though we've also had coral reefs rising from the sea," he said, citing a 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit the central island of Negros last year.
The Philippines lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire made up of chains of islands created by volcanic eruption that are also frequently hit by earthquakes.
President Benigno Aquino told reporters Thursday the institute had assured him the worst was over, though Bohol would continue to be hit by aftershocks over the next few weeks.
"There is no immediate danger" either from the aftershocks or from the ground fissures, said Aquino, who slept in an army tent there overnight Wednesday in solidarity with the survivors.

7.2-magnitude earthquake hits Bohol - October 15,2013

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Bohol Tuesday morning and damages to properties are expected, Phivolcs said.

The center of the strong quake was recorded in Carmen, Bohol around 8:12 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The earthquake is of tectonic origin, Phivolcs added.

The quake was also felt in provinces around Bohol, with Intensity VII noted in Tagbilaran, nearby areas such as Inigaran, Negros Occidental (Intensity VI), Intensity V in Iloilo City; La Carlota; Intensity IV in Masbate City; Roxas City; San Jose, Culasi, Antique; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental; and Intensity III - Davao City.

An aftershock was also recorded about 8:28 am, with a 3.4-magnitude quake.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also asked its local offices to "undertake precautionary measures."

Megan Young Wins Miss World 2013

Megan Young Wins Miss World 2013

Philippines’ bet Megan Young becomes the "most beautiful woman in the world" as she wins the Miss World 2013 crown during the coronation night on September 28 (Saturday) in Bogor, Indonesia.

This year’s highly controversial pageant just made history after it installed the first-ever Filipina to win the coveted crown—bringing virtual chills and cheers online and in large part the whole of the Philippine archipelago whom she perfectly represented in the oldest surviving beauty pageant in the world.

The 23-year-old Filipino-American actress-TV host stunned the world as she presented the aura of a Miss World-in-the-making all throughout the pageant held in various parts of Indonesia.

Fearless forecast becomes reality

But even early in the game, Megan has been widely predicted as the next Miss World as she never run out of impressing the judges in the competition.

The Miss World organizers have shown early signs of picking the first Filipina titlist as they placed Megan in three of the five challenge events (formerly called fast track): first in the Top Model category, fourth in the Multimedia category, and fifth among the 11 finalists in the Beach Fashion Final.

While they no longer give the challenge events winners a sure spot in the final round, the winners have been awarded bonus points to their preliminary scores.

‘Curse broken’

The beauty queen hopeful goes down in history as the first-ever Filipina to win Miss World—breaking a popular urban legend that no Filipina will ever win the title.

The said legend can be traced back in 1977 when Peachy Veneracion made the curse after she was forced to withdraw from the pageant at the time.

Since then, despite the Philippines successful finish in Miss Universe and other international beauty tilts, the Miss World crown has been elusive until 36 years later.

In 2011, the Philippines almost won the title when Gwendoline Ruais placed second to Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela. Last year’s bet, Queneerich Rehman made it to the Top 15.
