The Philippine Azkals made history by becoming the first Philippine team to advance to the second round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Filipinos defeated Sri Lanka, 4-0, (5-1 on aggregate) much to the delight of thousands of local football fans who endured the rain just to witness the match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The second and controversial goal came from Phil Younghusband in the 42nd minute. The assistant referee blew his whistle and gave Younghusband a foul during his goal for supposedly pushing a Sri Lankan player. But, the head referee officially counted the goal, giving the Azkals a 2-0 lead and an aggregate score of 3-1 at the end of the first half.
Angel Guirado raised the score to 3-0 in the second half and ultimately crushed the hopes of the smaller boys of Sri Lanka.
Phil Younghusband scored on the penalty shot after Fil-German midfielder Stephan Schrock was brought down in the penalty area by a Sri Lankan defender.
Azkals defeated Sri Lanka, final score 4-0, (5-1 on aggregate).
Philippines will now advance to the second round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers for the first time. Azkals will play against Kuwait on July 23 and 28.
