Miss Philippines Bea Rose Santiago - 53rd Miss International

Miss Philippines Bea Rose Santiago took home the crown in the 53rd Miss International pageant, held at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel Hall in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday, December 17.

Miss International 2012 Ikumi Yoshimatsu of Japan crowned her successor, Bea Rose, who bested 66 other delegates from around the world.

Bea Rose impressed the judges during the Q&A portion where she said she wants to "sustain the spirit of sympathy and hope," when asked about what she would do if she wins the crown.

Before Bea left for Japan, she told the press that she is dedicating the competition to the survivors of typhoon Yolanda. "I'm dedicating my pageant for the Haiyan or Yolanda victims. I'm not going there just as Bea Santiago, but as Miss Philippines. If I win or if I make it, that would bring happiness to them and make them proud,” Bea previously said.

Miss Netherlands Nathelie Den Dekker was crowned first runner-up, while Miss New Zealand Casey Radley was declared second runner-up. Miss Colombia Lorena Hermida and Miss Hungary Brigitta Otvos were included in the Top 5.

This is the fifth time that the Philippines has won the Miss International title. Past winners include Precious Lara Quigaman, Gemma Cruz-Araneta, Melanie Marquez, and Aurora Pijuan.

Miss International beauty pageant aims to promote goodwill and cultural understanding globally.

Donaire Wins by TKO - Donaire vs Darchinyan

Nonito Donaire, Jr. gave the Philippines a little something to cheer about in the midst of the death and devastation left by super typhoon Yolanda, stopping old foe Vic Darchinyan in the ninth round of their 10-round non-title bout in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Trailing in the scorecards of two of the three judges after eight rounds, Donaire (32-2) stepped it up in the ninth and caught Darchinyan (39-5-1) with a left hook followed by a solid right that sent the Armenian-Australian crashing to the canvass at the 1:10 mark. The 37-year-old Darchinyan got up at the count of four, but Donaire immediately went for the kill, tagging Darchinyan with another right that sent him reeling into the ropes.

Donaire then chased Darchinyan around, finally trapping his opponent in a corner and landing successive blows that forced referee Laurence Cole to wave it off at the 2:06 mark.

The win allowed Donaire to bounce back from a stunning unanimous decision loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux last April, and he immediately called out the Cuban for a rematch during the post-fight interview.

"That's who I want," he said, referring to Rigondeaux.

The stoppage win also put a definitive conclusion to his domination of Darchinyan, whom he first knocked out in 2007 in the fifth round of their International Boxing Federation flyweight title match. Darchinyan had always claimed the loss was a fluke and more of a lucky punch.

Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler - Miss Universe 2013

Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler was crowned Miss Universe 2013 during the coronation night held at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia on November 9 (November 10, Philippine time).
The 25-year-old TV personality from Maracay bested 85 rivals including the Philippines’ Ariella Arida as 3rd runner-up; Miss Spain, 1st runner-up; Miss Ecuador, 2nd runner-up; and Miss Brazil, 4th runner-up.
The judges for the main show were Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler, Russian pop king Philipp Kirkorov, Chef Nobu, Ice skating gold medalist Tara Lipinski, Italo Fontana, model Anne V, Carol Alt and Farouk Shami.  US TV presenter Thomas Roberts and ex-Spice Girls Mel B hosted the pageant.

Miss Venezuela's winning answer to judge Steven Tyler's question "What is your biggest fear and how do you plan to overcome it?" is "For me while one may have a lot of fears but nonetheless this is nothing negative. I believe we should overcome all of our fears and this in turn would make us much stronger and mostly we can become stronger persons. As soon as we overcome our fears and we are sure of ourselves then we can face any challenge."

Ariella meanwhile, believes the solution to the lack of jobs among young people starting their careers around the world is education.
"For the people who have lack of jobs, I do believe that we people should invest in education and that is my primary advocacy because if we all know that everyone of us is educated and well aware of what we are doing, we can land into jobs and we could land our careers in the future. So education is a primary source and it's a ticket for a better future."

More than 10,000 feared dead in Typhoon YOLANDA

The death toll from a super typhoon that decimated entire towns in the Philippines could soar well over 10,000, authorities warned Sunday, making it the country's worst recorded natural disaster.
The horrifying estimates came as rescue workers appeared overwhelmed in their efforts to help countless survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which sent tsunami-like waves and merciless winds rampaging across a huge chunk of the archipelago on Friday.
Police said they had deployed special forces to contain looters in Tacloban, the devastated provincial capital of Leyte, while the United States announced it had responded to a Philippine government appeal and would send military help.

"Tacloban is totally destroyed. Some people are losing their minds from hunger or from losing their families," high school teacher Andrew Pomeda, 36, told AFP, as he warned of the increasing desperation of survivors.
"People are becoming violent. They are looting business establishments, the malls, just to find food, rice and milk... I am afraid that in one week, people will be killing from hunger."
Authorities were struggling to even understand the sheer magnitude of the disaster, let alone react to it, with the regional police chief for Leyte saying 10,000 people were believed to have died in that province alone.
"We had a meeting last night with the governor and, based on the government's estimates, initially there are 10,000 casualties (dead)," Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria told reporters in Tacloban.
"About 70 to 80 percent of the houses and structures along the typhoon's path were destroyed."

Supertyphoon YOLANDA - at least 100 people dead

Aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda :
At least 100 people may have died in the Philippines from the impact of super typhoon Haiyan, Bodies were lying in the streets, according to an initial report from an aviation officer in the central city of Tacloban, said Captain John Andrews, deputy director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
Haiyan, possibly the strongest storm ever to hit land, was barrelling out of the Philippines after having flattened houses, triggered landslides and floods and knocked out power and communications across a number of islands.

Bohol Rocky Wall

A deadly earthquake that struck the Philippines last week created a spectacular rocky wall that stretches for kilometres through farmlands, astounded geologists said Thursday.
Dramatic pictures of the Earth-altering power of the 7.1-magnitide quake have emerged as the government worked to mend the broken central island of Bohol, ground zero of the destruction.

A "ground rupture" pushed up a stretch of ground by up to three metres (10 feet), creating a wall of rock above the epicentre, Maria Isabel Abigania, a geologist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, told AFP.
"Our people have walked five kilometres (three miles) so far and not found the end of this wall," she said, as experts from the institute surveyed the damage.
"So far we have not gotten any reports of people getting swallowed up in these cracks. The fault runs along a less-populated area."
A photograph on the institute's website showed part of the rock wall grotesquely rising on farmland behind an unscathed bamboo hut.
Another house was shown lodged in a crack of the Earth, while a big hole on the ground opened up at a banana farm.
Renato Solidum, head of the institute, said the ground fissures from the quake, which killed 198 people on Bohol and two nearby islands, were among the largest recorded since the government agency began keeping quake records in 1987.
"Most of our other quake records show a lateral (sideways) tearing of the earth, though we've also had coral reefs rising from the sea," he said, citing a 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit the central island of Negros last year.
The Philippines lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire made up of chains of islands created by volcanic eruption that are also frequently hit by earthquakes.
President Benigno Aquino told reporters Thursday the institute had assured him the worst was over, though Bohol would continue to be hit by aftershocks over the next few weeks.
"There is no immediate danger" either from the aftershocks or from the ground fissures, said Aquino, who slept in an army tent there overnight Wednesday in solidarity with the survivors.

7.2-magnitude earthquake hits Bohol - October 15,2013

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Bohol Tuesday morning and damages to properties are expected, Phivolcs said.

The center of the strong quake was recorded in Carmen, Bohol around 8:12 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The earthquake is of tectonic origin, Phivolcs added.

The quake was also felt in provinces around Bohol, with Intensity VII noted in Tagbilaran, nearby areas such as Inigaran, Negros Occidental (Intensity VI), Intensity V in Iloilo City; La Carlota; Intensity IV in Masbate City; Roxas City; San Jose, Culasi, Antique; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental; and Intensity III - Davao City.

An aftershock was also recorded about 8:28 am, with a 3.4-magnitude quake.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also asked its local offices to "undertake precautionary measures."

Megan Young Wins Miss World 2013

Megan Young Wins Miss World 2013

Philippines’ bet Megan Young becomes the "most beautiful woman in the world" as she wins the Miss World 2013 crown during the coronation night on September 28 (Saturday) in Bogor, Indonesia.

This year’s highly controversial pageant just made history after it installed the first-ever Filipina to win the coveted crown—bringing virtual chills and cheers online and in large part the whole of the Philippine archipelago whom she perfectly represented in the oldest surviving beauty pageant in the world.

The 23-year-old Filipino-American actress-TV host stunned the world as she presented the aura of a Miss World-in-the-making all throughout the pageant held in various parts of Indonesia.

Fearless forecast becomes reality

But even early in the game, Megan has been widely predicted as the next Miss World as she never run out of impressing the judges in the competition.

The Miss World organizers have shown early signs of picking the first Filipina titlist as they placed Megan in three of the five challenge events (formerly called fast track): first in the Top Model category, fourth in the Multimedia category, and fifth among the 11 finalists in the Beach Fashion Final.

While they no longer give the challenge events winners a sure spot in the final round, the winners have been awarded bonus points to their preliminary scores.

‘Curse broken’

The beauty queen hopeful goes down in history as the first-ever Filipina to win Miss World—breaking a popular urban legend that no Filipina will ever win the title.

The said legend can be traced back in 1977 when Peachy Veneracion made the curse after she was forced to withdraw from the pageant at the time.

Since then, despite the Philippines successful finish in Miss Universe and other international beauty tilts, the Miss World crown has been elusive until 36 years later.

In 2011, the Philippines almost won the title when Gwendoline Ruais placed second to Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela. Last year’s bet, Queneerich Rehman made it to the Top 15.

Janet Lim Napoles Surrenders - Pork Barrel Scam

Malacañang confirmed that Janet Napoles has surrendered after President Benigno Aquino III had put up a P10 million bounty for her arrest.

In an official statement, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Napoles surrendered to President Aquino at 9:37 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2013.

Aquino has turned the businesswoman over to the custody of interior and local government secretary Mar Roxas and Philippine National Police director-general Alan Purisima “for processing and booking.”

Atty. Lorna Kapunan, legal counsel of Napoles, told radio station DZMM that her client voluntarily surrendered to the president after the latter offered the reward money. Kapunan reportedly said that Reynald Lim, brother of Napoles, will follow suit.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Kapunan said her client trusted the president. The lawyer added they were assured that Napoles “will get due process of law.”

Napoles is “wanted on charges of serious illegal detention arising from the alleged kidnapping of Benhur Luy,” her relative and former employee, and the whistleblower of the controversial pork barrel fund misuse.

Pilipinas vs Korea - FIBA Asia 2013

Gilas Pilipinas beat Korea in FIBA ASIA 2013

The Philippines finally slew the host of Korea past, beating their arch nemesis, 86-79, to barge into the finals of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship and book a ticket to the World Cup of Basketball in Madrid, Spain next year.

Gilas squandered a nine-point lead entering the fourth period as the Koreans dropped an 18-4 run to grab the lead at 74-73 with 4:18 to go on a breakaway dunk by Kim Joo-Song. But the Filipinos kept their composure, with Jimmy Alapag hitting two big triples and Ranidel De Ocampo adding one more, to finally nail that elusive win over the Koreans.

Boston bombing 'used pressure cooker packed with metal' - Boston Marathon Bombing

Boston Bombing

Federal investigators involved in one of the largest manhunts in US history have revealed that the Boston Marathon bombs that killed three people and injured more than 170 may have been made from pressure cookers packed with ball bearings and nails.

More than 1,000 law enforcement officials from 30 state and federal agencies have been committed to tracking down whoever was responsible for Monday's twin blasts, the worst terror attack on US soil since 9/11. The forensic examination of the crime scene has begun to bear fruit, though officials concede that they still have no suspects and no motive for the bombing.

FBI agents leading the investigation are pitting their hopes on the public as they believe the instigator of the attack may well have revealed themselves to others. "The person who did this is someone's friend, co-worker or relative. Someone knows who did this," said Rick DesLauriers, special agent in charge of the Boston FBI, which is leading the investigation.

Forensic examiners have recovered fragments of black nylon cloth they believe to have come from backpacks used to carry both bombs. They have also found what DesLauriers described as "fragments of nails that could have been contained in a pressure cooker". He added that he was talking about a basic household pressure cooker of the sort found in many kitchens.

The devices exploded at about 2.50pm on Monday, within seconds of each other and 50 metres apart, causing a current casualty toll of 176 injured, 17 critically, and three dead. Two of the dead have been named: Martin Richard, an eight-year-old boy from Boston's Dorchester neighbourhood, and Krystle Campbell, 29, who had been at the finish line to watch her boyfriend complete the race. The Chinese consulate in New York said that the third fatal victim was a Chinese citizen whose identity was not being made public at the request of their family.

In a statement from the White House briefing room, President Barack Obama underlined the lack of hard information about what he called the "heinous" acts in Boston, but pointedly made clear the US was now viewing it as "an act of terror".

"We do not know if this was an act of an organisation, an individual or individuals, and we don't have a sense of motive yet," he said. "Everything else is speculation."

Obama will travel to Boston on Thursday to attend a multi-faith service for the victims, the White House said.

As details of the bomb devices began to emerge, the full horror of the incident became clearer. Investigators said the blast sites were massive, with debris found on nearby rooftops and embedded in the walls of buildings.

Several of the injured underwent amputations overnight – four at Massachusetts General hospital alone. It was also revealed that the devices had been packed with metal fragments and placed close to the ground, leading to a high number of amputations and serious lower body injuries.

George Velmahos, chief trauma surgeon at Massachusetts General – where many of the injured were taken – said nails and pellets were removed from the bodies of those hit in the blast.

Detectives clearly think that the heavy nature of the backpacks carried by the bomber or bombers could provide an essential clue that might trigger someone's memory. "We are postulating they would need to have been heavy bags to carry the device inside them. They would not have been light bags," the FBI chief said.

The sight of someone carrying a heavy black bag might also be significant in terms of video footage recovered from the crime scene. Forensic experts from the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, who specialise in the analysis of digital film, have arrived in Boston and will be involved in the massive task of combing through the voluminous mobile phone videos handed in from citizens as well as footage retrieved from security cameras in the vicinity of the bombing.

While the forensic developments sound promising, a large vacuum remains at the heart of the investigation: there remains no knowledge about the perpetrator or perpetrators and what motivated them. DesLauriers said in this regard that the hunt remained in its infancy. "At this time there are no claims of responsibility. The range of suspects and motives remains wide open."

He added that there was no idea whether those responsible were "a person or persons".

As Boston tried to get back to normal business on Tuesday, it was like a town cut in half. On the one hand, the historic town centre was looking its beautiful best, with visitors dining on the sidewalks under a cloudless sky and the brownstone streets adjacent to the bomb site lined with magnolia trees in bloom.

On the other hand, Swat teams armed with machine-guns were posted on most street corners and outside the hospitals, and a 12-block area around Boylston Street that formed the crime scene looked as though it had been subject to a military coup. The zone was swarming with detectives, the streets jammed with armoured vehicles, and the air resounded with the barking of sniffer dogs.

Public officials gave conflicting information about the possible use of pressure cookers. DesLauriers would not specify whether they believed a pressure cooker was used in both devices. But after the press conference ended, the US prosecutor Carmen Ortiz told reporters that a pressure cooker may have been used at both sites.

The FBI chief said he wanted to hear from any member of the public who had come across a friend, colleague or acquaintance who had expressed in recent months a desire to target the marathon; who had engaged in suspicious research on explosive devices; or who appeared to be carrying an unusually heavy dark bag in the vicinity of the blasts on Monday. DesLauriers also asked people to come forward if they had heard noises of explosions before yesterday that might have been test runs for the outrage.

Ed Davis, the Boston police commissioner, denied that the force had made any errors in the lead up to the marathon. He said the number of police officers had been increased at this year's marathon, particularly at the finish line, to match the large crowd that assembled to watch the end of the race.

"This is a soft target," he said. "Anybody can go into a church service and do this kind of thing. When you have an event like this, it can't be closed down like a military operation – by virtue of the event, it requires that we don't turn it into a police state."

While much of the public focus the day after the bombing is focused on the hunt for those who carried it out, the city is also working hard to support the victims and their families. Thomas Menino, the mayor of Boston, said he had visited wounded people in hospital.

"They are hanging in there," he said. "I saw a woman who had lost a leg – she showed a lot of courage. These families are going through very difficult times, and we have to show them all the help we can."

7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Indonesia

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia's mountainous West Papua province on Saturday but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The quake hit 256 km (159 miles) east of Enarotali and was 58 km (36 miles) deep, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
An Indonesian meteorological survey official said the quake struck on land and there was no danger of a tsunami off the thinly populated province, formerly called Irian Jaya, in Indonesia's far east.
The sprawling Indonesian archipelago is on the Pacific's "Ring of Fire" and gets regular earthquakes.
A magnitude 9.1 quake struck the northern Indonesian province of Aceh in 2004 triggering huge tsunami waves which killed more than 230,000 people in 13 countries around the Indian Ocean.

Benedict XVI: 10 things about the Pope's retirement

Pope Benedict XVI's resignation on Thursday - the first by a Pope for more than 600 years - is forcing the Vatican to consider some unusual questions. Here are 10 answers.

1. Name and title He will be known as Pope emeritus, or Roman pontiff emeritus, the Vatican announced on Tuesday. He will also continue to be known by his papal title of Benedict XVI, rather than reverting to Joseph Ratzinger, and he will continue to be addressed as "Your Holiness" Benedict XVI - in the same way, for example, as US presidents continue to be referred to as "president" after leaving office. "Emeritus" is a Latin word meaning "retired", from the verb "emereri" - to earn one's discharge by service.

2. New home Benedict XVI will leave the Vatican by helicopter before he resigns at 20:00 (19:00 GMT) on Thursday, but he will return in about three months to a new residence - a former convent known as Mater Ecclesiae - in the south-west corner of Vatican City. Reports suggest Vatican gardeners will continue to cultivate a 500 sq m organic fruit and vegetable garden there - the Pope is said to enjoy marmalade made from its oranges. Meanwhile - as Mater Ecclesiae is refurbished - he will stay in the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.

3. His clothing The Pope emeritus will continue to wear papal white - rather than the black of an ordinary priest, or the red of a cardinal. However it will be a simple cassock, with none of the flamboyant hats and vestments he revived during his papacy (prompting the Wall Street Journal to ask "Does the Pope Wear Prada?") He will be giving up his trademark red shoes, wearing instead brown shoes handmade for him by Mexican craftsmen during a visit to the country last year.

4. His ring The papal gold ring, known as the fisherman's ring, will be smashed with a specially designed silver hammer when the Pope leaves office. No change here from normal practice. "Objects strictly tied to the ministry of St Peter must be destroyed," the Vatican says. His personal seal will also be defaced.

5. His duties Benedict XVI will have no further administrative or official duties. He will not participate in the conclave to elect his successor (nor will any cardinal over the age of 80), though, since he appointed 67 of the 115 men who will take part in the conclave, his influence will be felt. Senior Catholics have also been re-reading speeches made by Benedict XVI before of his retirement for any hints about the qualities he believes his successor will require.

6. Life in retirement Announcing his resignation, the Pope said he would spend his time praying for the Church. His elder brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, has also said Benedict would be happy to advise his successor, if required. Writing and studying also seems likely to be on the agenda - Benedict had a library of 20,000 books installed in the papal apartments when he was elected in 2005. He also enjoys playing the piano and watching old black-and-white comedies - and he loves cats. At least one, Contessina, is known to live at Mater Ecclesiae.

7. Social media The Pope's Twitter accounts (@Pontifex and its eight different language versions) will go into hibernation when Benedict XVI steps down. He is expected to utter his final tweets along with his final general audience on Wednesday and before he departs the Vatican on Thursday - saying goodbye to the 2.5 million followers he has gained since opening his account late last year. Whether he will take the papal iPad on the helicopter is an open question. During the "interregnum" - the period between two popes - Vatican updates will be distributed from the Secretariat of State's account @TerzaLoggia.
8. Golden parachute Modest as Benedict XVI's retirement plans may be, as a bishop he will retain the Vatican's generous private healthcare policy and is likely to have recourse to the doctors who currently manage his medical treatment. It's possible he will continue to be cared for by the small group of German nuns who have looked after him during his papacy. As a pope has not retired for 600 years, there's no precedent for a papal pension plan, but Canon law requires each diocese to look after the welfare of retiring clerics. Rome will doubtless take good care of its Pope emeritus.

9. Georg Ganswein Benedict XVI's personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Ganswein - the photogenic face seen in the background of a million photographs - will stay in this post. However, he will also keep up his role as head of the papal household for Benedict's successor. He will be the servant of two masters.

10. Infallibility It's a widely held misconception the Pope is infallible in everything he says and does. In fact, the First Vatican Council of 1870 ruled a Pope's rulings are infallible only when they are made "ex-cathedra" - as part of a doctrinal statement about the Church. Benedict XVI never invoked this privilege (and in fact only one infallible statement has been made since 1870). When he resigns as Pope he will no longer be able to make ex-cathedra statements.

Pope Benedict XVI as emeritus pope after resignation

Pope Benedict XVI will be known as "emeritus pope" in his retirement and will continue to wear a white cassock, the Vatican has announced, again fuelling concerns about potential conflicts arising from having both a reigning and a retired pope.
The pope's title and what he would wear have been a major source of speculation ever since Benedict stunned the world and announced he would resign, the first pontiff to do so in 600 years.
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev Federico Lombardi, said Benedict himself had made the decision in consultation with others, settling on "Your Holiness Benedict XVI" and either emeritus pope or emeritus Roman pontiff as his titles following his resignation this Thursday.
Lombardi said he did not know why Benedict had decided to drop his other main title: bishop of Rome.
In the two weeks since Benedict's resignation announcement, Vatican officials had suggested that Benedict would be likely to resume wearing the traditional black garb of a cleric and would use the title "emeritus bishop of Rome" so as to not create confusion with the future pope.
Benedict's decision to call himself emeritus pope and to keep wearing white is sure to fan concern voiced privately by some cardinals about the awkward reality of having two popes, both living within the Vatican walls.
Adding to the concern is that Benedict's trusted secretary Monsignor Georg Gaänswein will be serving both pontiffs – living with Benedict at the monastery inside the Vatican and keeping his day job as prefect of the new pope's household.
Asked about the potential conflicts, Lombardi was defensive, saying the decisions had been clearly reasoned and were likely to have been made for the sake of simplicity. "I believe it was well thought out," he said.
Benedict himself has made clear he is retiring to a lifetime of prayer and meditation "hidden from the world". However, he will still be very present in the tiny Vatican city state, where his new home is right next door to the Vatican Radio and looks out over the dome of St Peter's Basilica.
While he will no longer wear his trademark red shoes, Benedict has taken a liking to a pair of hand-crafted brown loafers made for him by artisans in León, Mexico, and given to him during his 2012 visit. He will wear those in retirement, according to Lombardi.
Lombardi also spoke about the College of Cardinals meetings that will take place after the papacy becomes vacant – crucial gatherings in which cardinals will discuss the problems facing the church and set a date for the start of the conclave to elect Benedict's successor.
The first meeting was not now expected until Monday, Lombardi said, since the official convocation to cardinals to come to Rome will only go out on Friday – the first day of what is known as the sede vacante or the vacancy between papacies.
Benedict gave the cardinals the go-ahead on Monday to bring forward the start date of the conclave – tossing out the traditional 15-day waiting period. But the cardinals will not actually set a date for the conclave until they begin meeting officially on Monday.
Lombardi also further described Benedict's final 48 hours as pope. On Tuesday, he was said to be packing, arranging for documents to be sent to the various archives at the Vatican and separating out the personal papers he will take with him into retirement.
On Wednesday, Benedict will hold his final public general audience in St Peter's Square – an event that has already drawn 50,000 ticket requests. He will not greet visiting prelates or VIPs as he normally does at the end but will greet some visiting leaders – from Slovakia, San Marino, Andorra and his native Bavaria – privately afterwards.
On Thursday, the pope meets with his cardinals in the morning and then flies by helicopter at 5pm to Castel Gandolfo, the papal residence south of Rome. He will greet parishioners there from the balcony of the palace – his final public act as pope.
And at 8pm, the exact time at which his retirement becomes official, the Swiss Guards standing outside the doors of the palace will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic church then finished.
Benedict's personal security would be assured by Vatican police, Lombardi said.
