why is popeye on google | Popeye google logo

Today, Google celebrates on its homepage the 115th anniversary of cartoonist E.C. Segar’s birthday, the creator of the famous cartoon character Popeye. The Google logo doodle of Popeye shows the balding sailor with his forearms bulging from the muscle-producing spinach that he’d love to eat to give him extra strength.

Google have depicted the cartoon character, which first entered the public consciousness back in 1929 in Segar’s newspaper comic strip, in a typically feisty pose, to honor Elzie Crisler Segar on what would have been his 115th birthday.

Segar was born in Illinois on December 8th 1894 and showed talent in drawing at quite a young age. He studied a correspondence course in cartooning, before he eventually decided to move to Chicago to pursue his career in cartoons.

The cartoonist died on October 13th, 1938 at the age of 43. The Popeye character has lived on since then, appearing in television cartoons, advertisements and even in a 1980 movie about the character, which starred Robin Williams
