Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab Allegedly Attempts to Blow Up Northwest Flight 253. The suspect, Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, is a Nigerian national who claims to have ties to al-Qaida tried to detonate an explosive aboard a Northwest Airbus 330 on a flight carrying 278 passengers. Also, the suspected terrorist is currently being treated for second-degree burns at the University of Michigan Medical Center. So far now he is in custody. He’s 23. He claims to be working with al Qaeda. He was on a “U.S. government watch list of people with suspected terrorist ties” — but not a no-fly list. He traveled from Lagos to Amsterdam to Detroit. He was traveling one way — no return ticket. He seems to have more than one name or alias. From Gawker’s Adrian Chen: “@rachelsklar How’d you settle on ‘Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’? I’m seeing “Abdul Mudallad” and “Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab”. CONFUSING.”
