Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania and Caroline county school divisions were among those planning a delayed opening until the second wave of snow started this morning.
Spotsylvania's first hint of the second snow was seen in the Livingston area about 7:30 a.m., said Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services James Meyer.
“Snow was coming in from the west and freezing in the parking lots started,” he said. “And in the northern part of the county we had reports of icy roads. Roads that were untreated were freezing up.”
Before that, the county had just a dusting of snow and Meyer thought schools could open two hours late without problems.
“Our expectation was the sun would come out and we’d be having melting before the buses went out,” he said.
That changed when a second wave of snow hit the region.
Word went out to Spotsylvania bus drivers between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. that schools would be closed. Shortly after that, the division’s automated message was relayed.
In Fredericksburg, buses were already rolling when the decision was made to close school for the day.
Culpeper County was the exception this morning, opening on time.
